Menu Item Categories
Summary
Menu item categories allow individual menu items to be grouped into one or more categories, e.g, appetizers, beverages, desserts.
Users can add or edit menu item categories, configure settings and adjustment reasons, assign menu items to each category and specify the order for displaying menu items within the category.
An image can be associated with the category on the media tab and localization allows the site to configure the category name in another language.
To access Menu Item Categories, go to Categories > Menu Item Categories.
Menu Item Categories grid
- The Menu Item Categories grid shows each menu item category and a subset of available settings.
- Columns with the filter icon can be filtered to create a subset of records.
- Several fields can be edited directly in the grid without opening the individual menu item category page.

| Save Changes/Cancel Changes | Save changes or discard changes made (deploy saved changes to the application). |
Search | Search by name by entering one or more letters of the category name; click Search. |
| CSV | Export file to CSV format. File includes Name, Description, External ID and Display Order. |
| Edit (pencil) icon | Click to edit menu item category. |
| Name | Menu item category name. |
| Description | Menu item category description. |
| External Code | Identifier field used by external systems/third-party integrations. |
| Upsell | Promotes a menu item within the menu item category based on the guest's order, randomly selected from items that have not been displayed already. |
| Tag | Can be used for third-party application integrations. Enter a code to use for integration or leave blank. |
| Payment pre-authorization required | Payment pre-authorization is required before ordering any items in this menu item category. |
| Display in guest UI | Items in this menu item category are displayed in the Guest UI. |
| Display in staff UI | Items in this menu item category are displayed in the Staff UI. |
| External ID | System-generated unique ID for the menu item category. |
| Display Order | Use the up and down arrows to set the menu item categories in the order to be shown on the application.
