Hard reboot an iPad

Before performing a hard reboot, disconnect any external devices (such as a magnetic stripe reader device) from the iPad.

Newer iPad models do not have a power button. Instructions below are for devices with and without a power button.

If the device has a power button

  1. Stop the multitasking applications running in the background of the device:

    1. Double-click the Home button.

    2. This will expose all applications running in the background.

    3. To close all running applications, swipe upward on each application on the screen until only the Home screen remains.

    4. Tap the Home screen to exit this mode.

  2. Hard boot the iPad device:

    1. Press and hold the Home and power (top) buttons simultaneously until the screen goes black then release the buttons.

    2. Wait one minute before turning the device back on.

If the device does not have a power button

  • Tap the AssistiveTouch virtual home button on your iPad screen, tap Device;  tap More.

  • On the AssistiveTouch menu, tap Restart. On the confirmation message, tap Restart to confirm and wait until your iPad reboots.
