Hard reboot an iPad
Before performing a hard reboot, disconnect any external devices (such as a magnetic stripe reader device) from the iPad.
Newer iPad models do not have a power button. Instructions below are for devices with and without a power button.
If the device has a power button
- Stop the multitasking applications running in the background of the device:
- Double-click the Home button.
- This will expose all applications running in the background.
- To close all running applications, swipe upward on each application on the screen until only the Home screen remains.
- Tap the Home screen to exit this mode.
- Hard boot the iPad device:
- Press and hold the Home and power (top) buttons simultaneously until the screen goes black then release the buttons.
- Wait one minute before turning the device back on.
- Press and hold the Home and power (top) buttons simultaneously until the screen goes black then release the buttons.
If the device does not have a power button
To restart an iOS 10 iPad without the power button, use AssistiveTouch:
- Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch. Tap the AssistiveTouch switch.
- Tap the AssistiveTouch virtual home button on your iPad screen, tap Device; tap More.
- On the AssistiveTouch menu, tap Restart. On the confirmation message, tap Restart to confirm and wait until your iPad reboots.
